Personalized Treatment for Female Infertility
There are several conditions which are linked to female infertility. Understanding the causes of infertility in women can be complex and requires a high level of expertise in reproductive endocrinology. Dr. Bruce Albrecht and Dr. Dana Ambler are both board-certified in this area, as well as obstetrics and gynecology. At Denver Fertility Albrecht Women’s Care in Denver and Englewood, CO, Drs. Albrecht and Ambler can diagnose female infertility and provide personalized treatment plans to help you build your family. Our team understands how stressful and emotional infertility can be and our compassionate fertility specialists will be with you every step of the way.
Causes of Infertility in Women
Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after at least one year of trying (or 6 months if the woman is over age 35). Approximately 35 percent of the common causes for infertility are associated with the female. A range of conditions can affect this process. The most common causes of female infertility include:
- Ovulation disorders, such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Age
- Damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, or cervix
- Medical conditions or endocrinologic disorders
- Smoking
- Excessive alcohol use
- Being overweight or underweight
- Poor diet
- Athletic training
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Hormonal imbalances
Certain conditions which affect the health of the reproductive system, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids can also affect your chances of becoming pregnant. Age also plays an important role in fertility. Aging affects the ability of your ovaries to release eggs, as well as the overall health of your eggs. In addition, older women have fewer eggs left within their ovaries, which can reduce the chances of successful fertilization.
Diagnosing Female Infertility
In general, we recommend couples try to become pregnant for at least a year before visiting a specialist. However, women over 35 should see a doctor after six months of trying to conceive.
During your first appointment, you and your partner will meet with Dr. Albrecht or Dr. Ambler for a full hour. Since many cases of infertility involve both female and male factors, it is important that you both attend the consultation. Your doctor will discuss your medical history and any symptoms you are experiencing, such as heavy or painful periods, as well as recommend necessary tests. These may include:
- Ovulation testing
- Endocrine (hormone) evaluation
- Evaluation of the fallopian tubes
- Ovarian reserve testing
- Saline-infused sonogram
- Ultrasound
If you have already undergone fertility screenings at another clinic, we can use this information as well to avoid repeat testing. Once we have completed a comprehensive evaluation, we can develop a personally tailored treatment plan.
Personalized Treatment Options
Drs. Albrecht and Ambler offer a range of treatments to improve patients' fertility and chances of conception. Your treatment plan will depend heavily on the underlying cause of your issues, as well as your personal preferences. Treatment may involve medication, minimally invasive surgery, artificial insemination, or another form of assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
At Albrecht Women’s Care, we understand that fertility treatment is a highly personal process. We work carefully to tailor care in a way that best complements your needs and lifestyle.
Drs. Albrecht and Ambler believe our patients have the right to conceive naturally or using the most conservative means possible, even if the chances of success are slim. We also strive to keep treatment as affordable as possible. To achieve these goals, we partner with a range of specialists to provide alternative services, including acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, and lifestyle and wellness counseling.
