What Is In Vitro Fertilization?

/

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) that can allow hopeful parents and those struggling with infertility to achieve their dreams of building a family. During in vitro fertilization, egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the mother or surrogate's uterus. IVF can use the mother and father's eggs and sperm, frozen eggs or sperm, frozen embryos, or donated eggs or sperm. We provide first-rate IVF treatment at affordable prices at our fertility clinic in Englewood, CO

The IVF Journey

IVF consists of several steps which typically take a few months to complete.

Who Should Consider IVF?

While our fertility specialists prefer to lead with conservative treatments whenever possible, Dr. Bruce Albrecht and Dr. Dana Ambler both believe that IVF should be recommended when patients have exhausted other avenues of treatment or have a particular fertility diagnosis, such as tubal factor infertility.

Many medical conditions can impact fertility. If you or your partner have any of the following conditions, consider scheduling with our team to discuss your IVF candidacy:

Take a Look at IVF Using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a method of fertilization in which a single sperm is directly injected into the egg. This is often used for couples with male factor infertility.

Paying for IVF

Denver Fertility Care strives to make in vitro fertilization affordable so more patients can achieve their dreams of growing their families.

Unlike clinics driven by corporate interests, our physician-owned practice puts patients over profits. We are dedicated to providing you with the highest level of IVF care at a cost competitive with other fertility clinics in Colorado. Most importantly, we achieve this goal without compromising your success.

Once your doctor completes a customized treatment plan, our staff will provide you with a transparent fee schedule based on your individual needs. We will work with your insurance to determine what services, if any, are covered prior to any procedures. We also work with several lenders to offer financing options for our patients, and also offer subscription fertility plans for IVF.

IVF Cycle Timeline

It is important to remember that IVF may take several months to complete depending on how your body reacts to medications and what tests and medications are required for your unique cycle.

Though it may sound intimidating, IVF is a time-tested and proven means of conception. At Denver Fertility Care, we offer a comforting, assuring environment for our patients through each step of the IVF process.
Though it may sound intimidating, IVF is a time-tested and proven means of conception. At Denver Fertility Care, we offer a comforting, assuring environment for our patients through each step of the IVF process.

Consultation

You will first meet with one of our fertility specialists at our Denver or Englewood fertility clinics. Your doctor will discuss your history, review any medical files, and order tests to determine if IVF is the right fertility treatment for you. Testing will be performed to determine the course of your IVF cycle. If you wish to use a surrogate, egg donation, sperm donation, or embryo donation, this can be discussed as well.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation

The female patient takes injectable medications, usually for 8-12 days. This prepares the body to develop multiple eggs. The goal is to produce several eggs at a similar stage of development.

Testing

You will visit the Englewood or Denver office frequently during this process for blood testing and ultrasound monitoring to measure follicle growth and development. This allows our doctors to make adjustments to medications and to time the rest of the cycle properly.

Egg Retrieval

Egg retrieval and embryo transfer occur at our Englewood office, where our IVF lab is located. Egg retrieval is an outpatient surgical procedure. We will administer light anesthesia to keep you completely comfortable. Your doctor will extract the eggs with a tiny needle through the vagina. You can return home the same day and resume regular activities the next day.

Sperm Preparation

The male partner provides a semen sample. The sperm sample is collected the same day as egg retrieval and then washed to get the best quality of sperm for insemination. If the male partner has an abnormal semen analysis, fertilization is done by injecting a single sperm into each egg through a process called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI.

Co-Incubation

The fertilized eggs, or embryos, are grown in our lab for 5-7 days, then undergo testing to identify chromosomal and genetic defects that may impede pregnancy success rates. Our state-of-the-art lab and embryologists monitor them to determine which will be best for embryo transfer.

Embryo Transfer

The female patient takes hormonal medications to prepare the uterus for embryo transfer. When the embryos are ready, you will return to our Englewood fertility clinic for embryo transfer. The embryo transfer procedure is painless as we pass a small catheter through the cervix to place your embryo in the uterus.

Pregnancy

You will be monitored for signs of pregnancy by laboratory evaluation. Once pregnancy is confirmed, we transfer your care to your OBGYN for the remainder of your pregnancy.

What are the Risks of IVF?

The most common risks of IVF treatment include:

Multiple births (twins or triplets)

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

Adverse reactions to fertility drugs

Our doctors monitor you closely throughout the process and customize treatment to your unique needs to minimize the risks and give you the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy.

Are There Alternatives to IVF?

Our Colorado fertility specialists are dedicated to providing the best, least invasive treatment possible to help you grow your family. Alternative fertility treatments may include:

Mini IVF

Mini IVF (minimal stimulation-in vitro fertilization protocol) offers an alternative to conventional IVF. Instead of using injectable medications, the woman will use oral medications like clomiphene citrate (Clomid) to stimulate follicle growth. This method encourages a smaller number of follicles to mature.

IUI

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is also known as artificial insemination (AI). During this process, washed sperm is directly injected into the uterus to naturally fertilize the egg. In some cases, ovulation stimulation and other medications are used to give the patient the best chance at success. IUI is often attempted as an initial fertility treatment, depending on your diagnosis.

Every Patient
Is Unique

/

It is important to remember that every patient is unique and individual, and treatment alternatives may vary depending on various factors like the cause of infertility. Discussing your individual fertility needs, and complete evaluation during your initial consultation will allow us to find the best route for fertility treatment.

Learn More About IVF With Dana Ambler, DO

In this presentation, Dr. Ambler discusses the IVF process, candidacy, and more to help educate patients on the process at Denver Fertility Care.
"I had an amazing experience here at this clinic with Dr. Ambler. I had one egg retrieval in November 2022 and one frozen embryo transfer in Feb 2023. I just graduated and completed my shots/meds at 11.5 weeks pregnant and am sad to leave Dr. Ambler's care. She and her nursing staff have been so supportive and helpful in this process. Everything at this clinic is very organized and you know exactly what you are getting into and what to expect. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with them and to have had such a seamless experience." Morgan
